Abstract

The caking tendency of sodium chloride in non-dendritic cubic form is reduced by mixing solid crystalline sodium chloride with a soluble nitroprusside or carbonylferrocyanide in an amount not exceeding 0.05% by weight and generally in a range between 0.00002 and 0.01%. The initial salt crystals may be produced in known manner, separated from the mother liquor by centrifuging or filtering or gravity draining. The resulting crystals containing less than 12% water, may be sprayed with an aqueous solution of, for example, sodium nitroprusside or carbonylferrocyanide. Examples refer to spraying salt obtained from vacuum evaporation of brine with an aqueous solution of sodium nitroprusside and to suspending salt in saturated brine and adding sodium nitroprusside to the suspension.
