Abstract
829,152. Pelleting plastic materials. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 24, 1957 [Aug. 4, 1956], No. 23406/57. Class 87(2). An apparatus for pelleting thermoplastic materials comprises a hollow frusto-conical die 1 having a plurality of extrusion orifices 2 on its internal face, at least one knife 17 arranged to revolve in a plane parallel to the internal face to sever the extruded material and means to conduct fluid through an internal core 18 to carry away the severed pellets. The die 1 is formed by inner and outer members 7, 8 with an insulating layer 9 between, has a jacket 3 with an inlet 5 for the plastic material, is surrounded by a heating jacket 4, and has the extrusion orifices 2, in four rows, staggered to allow the cut pellets to rise freely to a fluid outlet 26. The knives 17 on the core 18 are mounted on a shaft 20 which is rotatably sealed in an inlet 15 for the fluid which may be water at a pressure and temperature of ten to twenty p.s.i. and 85‹F to 140‹F. The plastic material may be polythene at a temperature of from 275‹F to 485‹F. The water may contain a corrosion inhibitor, e.g. sodium nitrite. Specification 774,681 is referred to.
