Abstract

An internally-plasticized copolymer emulsion comprises an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with at least one dialkyl ester of an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and at least one alkyl vinyl ether, the emulsion containing from 25-65% by weight of polymeric material, the polymeric material itself containing not less than 60% by weight of vinyl acetate. The ester of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid is preferably diethyl maleate, di-n-butyl maleate, di-isobutyl maleate, di-2-ethylhexyl maleate, or dibutyl fumarate. The ethers may be ethyl vinyl ether, isobutyl vinyl ether or isoamyl vinyl ether. Surface tension depressants such as sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and the cetyl ether of a polyoxyethylene glycol; stabilizers such as gum acacia, polyvinyl alcohol containing 10-30% of residual acetate groups, starch or modified starches, dextrin, and water-soluble salts of a polyacrylic acid, sodium ethylenesulphonate, or sodium acrylate; and polymerization initiators such as hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, sodium perborate or sodium percarbonate may be used. In examples, copolymers were made from (1) 516 parts of vinyl acetate, 64 parts of butyl vinyl ether and 64 parts of dibutyl maleate, and (2) 532 parts of vinyl acetate, 64 parts of dioctyl (2-ethyl hexyl)-maleate and 48 parts of ethyl vinyl ether. The product may be used in the compounding of paints.
