Abstract

1,182,073. Aqueous copolymer dispersion. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 18 Jan., 1968 [18 Jan., 19671, No. 2720/68. Heading C3P. An aqueous dispersion of a copolymer is prepared by copolymerizing, by an emulsion p )lymerization, (1) a vinyl ester, an acrylic acid ester, a methacrylic acid ester, or a mixture of any two or more of these substances, if desired together with up to 50%, based on the weight of the total monomer mixture, of one or more other olefinically unsaturated monomers, and (2) at least one monomer of the formula in which n is 1 or 2, B, represents a methyl or a phenyl group and, when n is 1, R 2 represents -OCH 2 COOCH=CH 2 , -COO-CH = CH 2 and when n is 2, R 2 represents in which radicals R 3 represent a straight-chained or branched alkyl radical having from I to 10 carbon atoms, in the presence of from 0.1 to 15% by weight, based on the monomers, of at least one emulsifier and/or protective colloid. In the examples vinyl acetate, vinyl esters of a mixture of C 9 _ 11 aliphatic carboxylic acids branched in the a-position, p-benzoyl-phenoxyacetic acid vinyl ester, p-hydroxybenzophenone acrylate, benzophenone-o-carboxylic acid vinyl ester, 4 - acrylamido - benzophenone, di - nbutylmaleate monomers of formula methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid and butyl acrylate were copolymerized in the presence of water, hydroxyethylation product of nonyl phenol with ethylene oxide, sodium vinylsulphonate, anhydrous sodium acetate, reaction l product of polypropylene oxide and ethylene t oxide, a copolymer of N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide and di-2-ethylhexylmaleate, potassium persulphate and polyvinyl alcohol. The copolymers are pigmented, e.g. with titanium dioxide, barium sulphate, talcum, chalk, heavy spar and hydrated iron oxide and cross-linked with a xenon lamp.
