Abstract

Fibres or fabrics of polyethylene terephthalate are bonded, coated or impregnated by treating them with a polyester softening at 140-230 DEG C. and derived from a glycol of the series HO(CX2)nOH, where X is H or CH3 and n is 2-10, and terephthalic acid, with or without another aromatic dicarboxylic acid. The polyester may be applied by deposition from a solvent. Specified polyesters are those derived from dimethyl terephthalate and (a) 1 : 4-butanediol, (h) hexamethylene glycol, (c) 2 : 2-dimethyl-1 : 3-propanediol, (d) and (e) a mixture of ethylene glycol and 1 : 4-butanediol; and (f) ethylene glycol and dimethyl isophthalate. In an example a cord of polyethylene terephthalate is dipped into a chloroform solution of polyester (f) whereby it is stiffened and made more cylindrical in form. The invention of Specification 783,555 is disclaimed.ALSO:Fibres or fabrics of polyethylene terephthalate are bonded, coated or impregnated by treating them with a polyester softening at 140-230 DEG C. and derived from a glycol of the series HO(CX2)nOH, where X=H or CH3 and n= 2-10 and terephthalic acid and, if desired, another aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g. isophthalic or phthalic acid). As a polycondensation catalyst there may be used an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide, a mineral acid, a metal oxide (e.g. litharge) or a metal salt. Some of the polyesters are soluble in chloroform. Examples describe polyesters obtained by polycondensing in the presence of litharge dimethyl terephthalate and (a) 1 : 4-butane diol, (b) hexamethylene glycol, (c) 2 : 2-dimethyl-1 : 3-propane diol; (d) and (e) a mixture of ethylene glycol and 1 : 4-butane diol; (f) ethylene glycol and dimethyl isophthalate. The invention of Specification 783,555 is disclaimed.
