828,914. Extrusion machines. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 29, 1956 [June 20, 1955], No. 9832/56'. Class 87(2) [Also in Group II] Plastic stock, e.g. raw rubber, is milled between an elongated screw 13 and an adjacent, oppositely rotating, shorter roller 15 of larger diameter, and is then fed by the screw through a closely surrounding cylinder 11 to an extrusion die 12. The axes of screw and roller are in the same horizontal plane. A hopper 10 partly encloses the part 45 of the screw opposite the roller, but leaves it exposed over an arc of at least 105 degrees. The bearings for the ends of the roller are adjustable laterally by screws 39, 40. Screw threads 33, 34 at the ends of the roller force back any stock tending to be pushed into the bearings. A heat-controlling fluid may be circulated through a jacket 16 in the cylinder 11, through the walls of the hopper 10 and through a space in the roller. The root diameter of the screw thread may decrease in the direction of extrusion opposite to the roller, and increase within the cylinder 11. Another roller may be supported in the hopper by a forked lever, and be urged downwardly by the piston of a pneumatic cylinder, to maintain the rubber inplace in the feed area.
