Abstract
828,813. Gas - fuelled lighters. NATIONALE S. A. July 6, 1956 [Aug. 4, 1955; June 11, 1956], No. 21029/56. Class 75(3) In a liquefied gas lighter in which gas is supplied to a burner through a device for evaporating and regulating the gas supply by adjusting the compression of an evaporation body, supplied with liquid fuel and placed transversely relative to the burner passage, between two parts one of which has an orifice for the supply of gas to the burner the two parts compressing the evaporation body and shaped so as to constitute an evaporation chamber in the interior of which the evaporation body is in a non-compressed state, one of the parts having a general annularly shaped projection to compress the body wholly around the non-compressed portion located in the evaporation chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, a tubular member 5,. provided at its upper end with a milled wheel 12, is screwed into a socket 4 in turn screwed into the upper wall 1 of a gaseous fuel reservoir. The lower end of the tubular member 5 is provided with. conically shaped orifice 9 and bears on a porous pad 8. By varying the pressure exerted by the member 5 on the pad 8 a compression zone, regulating the liquefied gas supply to the burner, is created around the evaporation zone of the pad 8 below the orifice 9. When the lighter is operated a cover 10a is raised and a rod 10, provided with a sealing pad 11 to seal the orifice 9, is lifted by the gas pressure to allow the gas to pass to the burner. The flame height is regulated by varying the pressure exerted by the member 5 on the pad 8. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the porous pad 8 is replaced by an evaporation body which is pressed against the reservoir base 2 through the intermediary of a plate resting on a resilient rubber element. In a further modification shown in Fig. 3 in which a tubular member 15 provided with a conically shaped orifice 9 and carrying an upwardly spring biased plunger 10 is welded to the upper wall 1 of the fuel reservoir the pressure on the evaporation body 8a is exerted by a spring-biased member 17 slidably mounted in a member 18 threaded into a part 20 and adjusted by a spindle 22 of square cross-section secured to a rotatable head 23. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the evaporation body 8a is held between a spring loaded member 26 and a member 30 provided with the conically shaped orifice 9. The member 26 and 30 are contained in a sleeve 25 screwed into the top 1 of the fuel reservoir. The pressure exerted by the member 30 on the evaporation body 8a is adjusted by a milled wheel 12 rotating a member 32 screwed into the sleeve 25. The limit of rotation in each direction of the milled wheel 12 is normally determined by a stop 33, attached to the milled wheel 12 and engaging a groove 34 in the top of the sleeve 25. abutting one or other of the faces of a stop 35 resiliently clamped to the sleeve 25, Fig. 5. Should the milled wheel 12 be required to rotate through a greater angle in either direction extra effort exerted on the milled wheel 12 will rotate the stop 35 about the sleeve 25. In yet a further embodiment shown, in Fig. 6 on the lower member 26 is formed as part of a solid plug screwed into the lower end of the sleeve 25 and the upper member 30 is provided with a chamber 36 formed below the conically shaped orifice 9. The top of the chamber 36 may be conical or flat. The chamber height is greater than one half of the evaporation body thickness in the uncompressed state, but less than this thickness. The chamber 36 may be formed in the part 26 or in each of the parts 26 and 30. The zone of compression on the evaporation body 8 or 8a has a surface less than four times the cross-sectional area of the orifice defining the zone of evaporation.
