Abstract

Hydrophobic filaments, made from synthetic linear hydrocarbon polymers containing a major proportion of the polymer in the isotactic form, are lubricated by contacting the filaments with an aqueous solution of at least one polymeric substance containing recurring oxyalkylene units. The filaments may be made from polyethylene or polypropylene, while the substance containing the oxyalkylene units may be a polyglycol, a polyethylene oxide or polyethylene glycol laurate. The lubricating composition may contain an anti-foaming agent such as nonyl alcohol, a boundary lubricant such as sodium stearate, a surface-active agent or an anti-static agent. In examples, polypropylene filaments are lubricated with an aqueous solution having dissolved therein polyethylene glycol, sodium stearate, "Lubrol" W (an anti-static agent; the word "Lubrol" is a Registered Trade Mark) and caustic soda. According to the Provisional Specification, trihydric alcohols such as glycerol may be employed instead of the substance containing the oxyalkylene units. Specification 770,416 is referred to.ALSO:Hydrophobic filaments, made from synthetic linear hydrocarbon polymers containing a major proportion of the polymer in the isotactic form, are lubricated by contacting the filaments with an aqueous solution of at least one polymeric substance containing recurring oxyalkylene units.
