828,497. Travelling-wave tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Nov. 15, 1957 [Dec. 4, 1956], No. 35629/57. Class- 39(1). In a forward-wave tube, the delay line consists of a number of rings 10, Fig. 2, connected to an outer wave-guide member 1 by radial spokes 11, 12 lying in planes passing through the beam axis, and a corresponding number of filler members 13, 14 are fixed to the inner wall of the guides between the spokes. The effect of the filler members is to decrease the electro coupling between the rings as compared with the magneto coupling, thus increasing the pass-band and reducing dispersion and ensuring that the fundamental forward wave has positive dispersion. Forms with one and three sets of spokes are shown. Further improvement is obtained by providing the filler members 13, 14, Fig. 5, with inwardly-projecting ridges 32 in between the rings. As shown an electron gun 4, 6, 7 produces an annular beam passing close to the rings. The rings and spokes may be hollow for cooling. Specification 780,107 is referred to.
