Abstract

828,375. Stretching and contracting webs transversely. HANSSEN, P. June 27. 1957 [June 30, 1956]. No. 20251/57. Class 100(1) A curved roller for transversely stretching and contracting webs comprises a flexible metal tube 2 formed with slots 8a transverse to the longitudinal axis of the roller and extending part of the way around the circumference and right through the thickness of the tube. As shown, the slots are arranged equidistantly along the longitudinal axis, adjacent slots being displaced relatively to one another by 90 degrees. The slots terminate in circular end portions 8. The tube 2 is supported by bearing supports 3 each having a ring 3a, secured to a fixed shaft 1 and ball bearings 3b fitting within a ring 3c. The outer surfaces of the rings 3c are surrounded by flexible tyre 3d. A covering 4 of flexible material is secured to the tube 2 by rings 9. The curvature of the shaft 1 is adjustable by means of a stay 12 engaging a longitudinal groove 11 in the core, the ends of the stay 12 having threaded ends carrying adjusting nuts. Transverse incisions 7 aligned longitudinally of the shaft 1 permit the shaft to be curved as required.
