Abstract
Compounds of the formula <FORM:0828329/III/1> in which X is hydrogen or a group which is neither chromophoric nor auxochromic (e.g. halogen or C1-6 alkoxy), n is an integer of from 1 to 5 and A is a group <FORM:0828329/III/2> where R1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. alkyl, aralkyl or aryl), R2 is hydrogen, a hydroxyalkyl or polyethanoxy group or a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. alkyl, aryl or aralkyl), and salts thereof, particularly alkali metal salts, are added as optical brighteners to solid or liquid soaps and synthetic detergents.ALSO:The invention comprises optical brightening compounds of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/1> in which X is hydrogen or a group which is neither chromophoric nor auxochromic (e.g. halogen or C1-6 alkoxy), n is an integer of from 1 to 5 and A is a group <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/3> where R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbon radical (e.g. alkyl, aralkyl, or aryl), R2 is hydrogen, a hydroxyalkyl or polyethanoxy group or a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. alkyl, aryl or aralkyl), and salts thereof, particularly alkali metal salts. The compounds are prepared by diazotizing a compound of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/4> and coupling the product of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/5> with a compound HB, where B is <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/6> <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/7> to give a dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV (b)/8> which is then oxidized with an alkali metal hypochlorite, cuprammonium sulphate, a copper sulphate-pyridine soluble complex, thionyl chloride or sulphuryl chloride.ALSO:Compounds of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV(c)/1> in which X is hydrogen or a group which is neither chromophoric nor auxochromic (e.g. halogen or C1-6 alkoxy), n is an integer of from 1 to 5 and A is a group <FORM:0828329/IV(c)/2> where R1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. alkyl, aralkyl or aryl), R2 is hydrogen, an hydroxyalkyl or polyethanoxy group or a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. alkyl, aryl or aralkyl), and salts thereof, particularly alkali metal salts may be used alone or with other optical whitening agents for imparting whiteness to cotton, linen, protein, e.g. wool, and polyamide textile materials and to paper. A dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV(c)/3> is prepared by coupling a compound of the formula <FORM:0828329/IV(c)/4> with a compound of the formula HB, where B is <FORM:0828329/IV(c)/5> and R1, R2, X and n are as defined above.
