Abstract
The invention comprises sulpho-stilbene triazoles of the general formula <FORM:0874611/IV (b)/1> and salts thereof, wherein X and Y which may be the same or different represent hydrogen or mono valent radicals which are neither chromophoric nor auxochromic such as halogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy groups containing 1-6 carbon atoms or sulphonic acid groups, n is a whole number from 1 to 5 and m a whole number from 1 to 4. The compounds may be prepared by oxidising o-amino azo dyes of the general formula <FORM:0874611/IV (b)/2> suitably with an alkali metal hypochlorite, cuprammonium sulphate, a mixture of copper sulphate and diethanolamine, a pyridinecopper sulphate complex, thionyl chloride or sulphuryl chloride the product may be isolated in salt form. The azo dyes may be prepared (see Group IV(c)) from the products obtained by diazotising amines of the general formula <FORM:0874611/IV (b)/3> Specified products are 2-(411-styryl-311-sulphophenyl) (acenaphtheno-61 : 71-4 : 5)-1 : 2 : 3- triazole and the corresponding 4111-methoxy styryl, 51-sulpho acenaphtheno, 31-chloro acenaphtheno, 4111-chloro styryl, 2111-chloro styryl and 2111-sulpho styryl compounds and their sodium salts, all prepared from the appropriate 4-amino-stilbene 2-sulphonic acid. The compounds are optical whitening agents for textile materials (see Groups IV(c) and XX) and may be used in washing preparations (see Group III). According to the Provisional Specification X may be an aryl or aralkyl group.ALSO:Textile materials such as cotton, linen and polyamide, e.g nylon materials and paper are optically whitened by means of sulpho stilbene triazoles of the general formula:- <FORM:0874611/IV(c)/1> or salts e.g. alkali metal salts thereof, wherein X and Y, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen or monovalent radicals which are neither chromophoric nor auxochromic such as halogen atoms, sulphonic acid groups, alkyl or alkoxy groups containing 1-6 carbon atoms or according to the Provisional Specification, aryl or aralkyl groups and n and m are whole numbers from 1-5 and 1-4 respectively. o-Amino azo dyes, used as starting materials for the above triazoles (see Group IV(b)), and having the general formula:- <FORM:0874611/IV(c)/2> X, Y, n and m being as above defined are prepared by diazotizing as amine of the general formula:- <FORM:0874611/IV(c)/3> and coupling the product with an amine of the general formula:- <FORM:0874611/IV(c)/4> The substituent X is preferably in the o- and/or p-position relative to the side chain and Y is preferably in the 31, 51 and/or 81 position.ALSO:Soaps and synthetic detergent compositions comprise as optical whitening agents sulpho stilbene triazoles of the general formula <FORM:0874611/III/1> wherein X and Y, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen or monovalent radicals which are neither chromophoric nor auxochromic such as halogen atoms, sulphonic acid groups, alkyl or alkoxy groups containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or according to the Provisional Specification, aryl or aralkyl groups and n and m are whole numbers from 1 to 5 and 1 to 4 respectively, and salts e.g. alkali metal salts thereof.
