Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV(b)/1> in which X is hydrogen or a group which is neither chromophoric nor auxochromic (e.g. alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy or halogen), n is an integer of from 1 to 5 and R1 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical (e.g. C1-6 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, polyethanoxy, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, chlorophenyl or sulphophenyl) and salts thereof, particularly alkali metal salts. The compounds are obtained by diazotising a compound of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV(b)/2> coupling the resulting diazo compound of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV(b)/3> with a compound of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV(b)/4> to give a dyestuff of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV(b)/5> which is then oxidised with an alkali metal hypochlorite, cuprammonium sulphate, copper sulphate-pyridine soluble complex, thionylchloride or sulphuryl chloride. The compounds may be used alone or with other whitening agents for imparting whiteness to cotton, linen, paper and photographic paper, and are added to liquid or solid soaps or synthetic detergents.ALSO:Cotton, linen, paper and photographic paper are brightened by treatment with compounds of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV (c)/1> in which X is hydrogen or a substituent which is neither chromophoric nor auxochromic (e.g. an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkoxy group or halogen), n is an integer of from 1 to 5 and R1 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical (e.g. C1-6 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, polyethanoxy, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, chlorophenyl or sulphophenyl) and salts thereof particularly alkali metal salts. The whitening agents of the above formula may also be used for the above treatment in conjunction with other whitening agents. The compounds are obtained by diazotising a compound of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV (c)/2> coupling the resulting diazo compound of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV (c)/3> with a compound of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV (c)/4> to give a dyestuff of the formula: <FORM:0855784/IV (c)/5> which is then oxidized with an alkali metal hypochlorite, cuprammonium sulphate, copper sulphate-pyridine soluble complex, thionylchloride or sulphuryl chloride.ALSO:Liquid or solid soaps and synthetic detergents are brightened by the addition of compounds of the formula: <FORM:0855784/III/1> in which X is hydrogen or a group which is neither chromophoric nor auxochromic (e.g. alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy or halogen), n is an integer of from 1 to 5 and R1 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical (e.g. C1-C6 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, polyethanoxy, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, chlorophenyl or sulphophenyl) and salts thereof, particularly alkali metal salts. The above whitening agents may also be added in conjunction with other whitening agents.
