Abstract

828,289. Inking-apparatus. WORTHING- TON, E. W. Feb. 7, 1958 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 4035/58. Class 100(2) A rotary letterpress ink fountain includes a fountain roller rotating in a housing to feed ink to a rotary printing member, an ink-retaining cavity formed by a pair of spaced blades contacting the upwardly-moving part of the roller surface, an outlet from the cavity above the lower blade, means for supplying ink to the cavity in excess of the amount transferred to the printing member so that there is a continuous overflow through the outlet, a screened drain in the housing near its bottom, and a pump to circulate ink from the drain to the supply means for the cavity. The fountain roller 12 is rotated counter-clockwise in a housing 10 with a metal strip 18 to prevent the entrance of dirt. An ink cavity is formed by a down blade 20, a sheet metal support 36, and attached thereto a wiping blade 16 of nylon 0.025 inches thick. The wiping blade removes any paper or dirt on the roller 12. The doctor blade 20 is adjusted to regulate the flow of ink by screws 30 spaced columnwise along its length and rotated by wing nuts 34 or from a remote position through worm gearing 32. Ink is supplied to the cavity by a motor-driven pump 66 through a pipe 46 in excess of that fed to the press by the duct roller 49 the excess falling from overflow holes 40, together with dirt from the blade 16 on to a screen comprising an upper screen member 62 and a finer lower screen member 64. The ink passes through the screen to a drain 56 and through a pipe 58 to an ink supply tank 60, where it is returned to the cavity by the pump.
