Abstract

827,863. Jet propulsion plant. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. May 25, 1956, No. 16221/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XII and XXIX] A ram jet has the combustion chamber divided into a pair of separate combustion spaces into one of which fuel is injected at a rate a fixed percentage greater than the rate at which the fuel is fed to the other combustion space so as to obtain different fuel to air ratios and means responsive to the difference in the resulting pressures in the combustion spaces for varying the rate at which fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber. The ram jet 10, Fig. 1, is divided into two complementary spaces A, B into which fuel is injected by nozzles 24, 26, respectively. The nozzles 24 inject into the space A more fuel than the nozzles 26 inject into the space B. This results in a pressure difference between the spaces A and B which changes sign as the fuel-air ratio passes through the stoichiometric condition. This pressure difference is used to control a regulator 20 which controls the fuel flow to the nozzles 24, 26. Variations in the pressure difference between the spaces A and B cause movement of the bellows 30 which actuate a valve 44 through a lever 36. Movement of the valve 44 will vary the pressure in the bellows 50 which pressures are slightly greater than the pressures in the chamber 52 due to the restriction shown. The resulting movements of the bellows 50 control the fuel flow regulating valve 58. An adjustable spring 64 is provided so that the regulator can be set at any desired fuel-air ratios. The inner central body 12 may carry the fuel and fuel-flow regulating mechanism. One set of fuel nozzles may be pilot nozzles.
