Abstract

729,077. Jet propulsion plant; gas turbine plant. HOBSON, Ltd., H. M., GREENLAND, L. S., and STENNING, K. A. Dec. 18, 1953 [Jan. 5, 1953], No. 276/53. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XIX and XXIX] The fuel supply system for the engine, e.g. a combustion turbine or ram jet engine, of an, airborne vehicle comprises an air fuel ratio controller sensitive to total head pressure at the engine air intake, and a Mach number control unit which modifies the pressure applied to the air/fuel ratio controller in a sense to reduce fuel flow when a predetermined number is attained. The total head pressure acts on a diaphragm 46 which actuates a ball valve 45 controlling a vent 43 from a servo-cylinder 38 to which fuel is fed through a restriction 42. A spring 39 is interposed between the ball valve and a servopiston 35 and the latter is urged upwardly by fuel under pressure entering at 29. The servopiston is thus positioned in accordance with the total head pressure at the engine air intake and a metering valve 48 integral with the servo-piston maintains the fuel flow proportional to that pressure. The pressure drop across the metering valve is maintained constant by a spring-loaded valve 37 on the outlet side of the metering valve and subject to the two pressures acting on either side of a diaphragm 49. The pressure applied to the diaphragm 46 passes through passages 11, 12 of the Mach number control unit between which is a vent 7 controlled by a normally closed valve 1. When the predetermined Mach number is, reached the valve 1 is opened by bellows 3, 4 to lower the pressure applied to the diaphragm 46, both bellows being subject externally to static atmospheric pressure and the bellows 3 being subject internally to the total head pressure whilst the bellows 4 is evacuated. The bellows act through a lever 2 with an adjustable fulcrum 5. In a modification, the lever 2 is omitted and the bellows, of dissimilar areas, are mounted coaxially one within the other and act directly on the valve 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 615,451.
