827,773. Determining moisture content of materials. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. April 15, 1957, No. 12203/57. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XX] Test apparatus for determining the moisture content of material 39 comprises means 69 for applying a stretching load to the material, a scale 135 for indicating the moisture content of the material as based on its degree of elongation and a device 109 for maintaining the stretching load for a predetermined time period. As shown, the test sample 39 is held by clamps 43, 45, a weight 147 being attached to the lower end to ensure that the sample is taut. The lower clamp 45 is fixed and the upper clamp 43 connected to a pivoted beam 21 which is held horizontally by a brake (not shown) acting on an arcuate segment 89, and by a latch 75. Weights 69 are adjustably mounted on the beam 21 and provide the stretching load for a test. To test the material, latch 75 is released, operating a micro-switch 83, which energizes a solenoid 109 through an electric timer. Energization of the solenoid 109 pivots the segment 89 against the action of a spring 93 thus releasing the brake. Thus the load 69 acts on the sample 39 until at the end of the predetermined period, the solenoid 109 is de-energized and the brake reapplied. The extension of the test piece is then read from the scale 135 on the segment 89, and this is a measure of the moisture content of the sample. The scale 135 may be graduated directly in terms of moisture content. Serrations 125 on a second arcuate segment 127 are engaged by a pawl 115 to prevent the beam 21 from oscillating when released.
