Classes 43 and 89(3) In attaching to the outer face of a pocket, sleeve or folded part of flexible material, a device (for example a releasable fastening element of a trouser waistband) which is to be secured by clenched over prongs to a backing plate on the underside of the material, the backing pate is held in predetermined position in gripping elements or jaws of tongs or a like carrier member of elongated form insertable into the pocket or sleeve and adapted to, be mounted and located in the clenching press so as to correctly position the backing plate in the clenching press prior to the application of the device by means of the clenching press. In Fig. 4, a' pair of tongs has legs 8a, 8b, closed by a spring 14 and formed with jaws 16a, 16b provided with notches 18, Fig. 6, which co-operates with ears 4 on the backing plate 2, Fig. 1, which is thereby located within the jaws 16a, 16b. The tongs are pivoted to the base 19 of the clenching press so as to be swingable from a position (shown in broken lines) in which the legs overhang the base 19 to permit the legs to be inserted into the waistband pocket, to a position determined by a stop 21 in which the jaws 16a, 16b and the backing plate carried therebetween are located beneath the tool 22 of the clinching press. The base 19 of the press carries a spring pressed upstanding pin 24 which is adapted to pierce the lower layer of the waistband material to engage in a locating hole 3 of the backplate 2. In a modification the tongs are mounted in a slideway secured to the base 19 so as to slide in the direction of its length between two extreme positions in one of which its jaws 16a, 16b overhang the edge of the base and in the other of which it is correctly located with respect to the tool 22 for the clenching operaton In the embodiment of Fig. 10, the carrier member 36 comprises tongs formed with jaws 37, 38 which are closed by a spring 43 between handles 41, 42 to grip upper and lower faces of the back plate 29 shown in Fig. 9. The handle 41 has two spaced holes 44 which fit over two similarly spaced pegs 45 on the base 19 of the press to locate the device. The gripping end of the jaw 38 has two projections 46, Fig. 11 which engage spaced holes 47 in the back-plate 29. A further pair of holes 48 in the back-plate 29 are adapted for engagement with two upstanding locating pins on the base 19 of the press which enable the carrier member to be removed after the back-plate 29 has been inserted into the waistband pocket and properly positioned in the press. The securing prongs may be formed either on the back-plate, or on the device on the outer face of the pocket, in which case the carrier member is formed with clenching surfaces which in the construction Fig. 10 are provided on an extension of the jaw 37 beyond the jaw 38. The Provisional Specification states that a back-plate may be retained upon a plate insertable into the pocket or that a plurality of backplate members, or each back plate member may be produced from a sheet metal blank so as to provide a continuous strip insertable into the pocket.
