Abstract
827,245. Jointing by forging. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. June 3, 1958 [June 4, 1957], No. 17804/57. Class 83 (4). A malleable metal stud 1 is secured within a hole in a malleable metal plate or the like 3 by indenting the plate at 17 around the or each projecting end of the stud to force the plate metal into intimate contact with the stud. The stud and plate are preferably of copper or copper rich alloy and are used in electrical bus-bars. Where a threaded stud projects on one side only of the plate it is first screwed into a tapped hole therein, a cap nut 7 is screwed on the projecting end until an annular projection 11 engages the plate surface 4 and a tool 8 with a projection 14 engages within a recess 12 in the'stud at the plate surface 5. Nut 7 and tool 8 are then forced together by an hydraulic press or by hammering whereby the indent 17 is formed and simultaneously the stud is expanded at 18. When the stud projects from both sides of the plate two cap nuts 7 are used to form indentations at both plate surfaces. Cap nut 7 may be replaced by a sleeve having a through bore. The projecting end or ends of the stud may be plain and the cap nut or the sleeves then have plain bores closely fitting the plain surfaces of the stud.
