Abstract

904,098. Cable connectors; sleeve couplings. BERNARD WELDING EQUIPMENT CO. July 11, 1960 [July 15, 1959], No. 24087/60. Class 38 (1). An electrical cable connector comprises a tubular malleable metal body member having an integral exterior lug which may be depressed, e.g. by hammering, to produce an indentation in the surrounding metal which grips the end of a cable inserted in the body. Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of a stranded wire cable 28 compressed by indent 30 after lug 27 has been hammered in, the thickness of the cylinder wall 31 being less than the thickness of the sides 26 or of the flat base 25 to ensure that only the top wall of the cylinder part will collapse when lug 27 is hammered. The connector has a tongue 21 with a hole therein for bolting the connector to another component of a circuit. The connector may be cylindrical, in which case it is supported in a saddle block with a flat base during attachment to the wire (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). A connector for joining two separate cables 53, 54 is shown in Fig. 8, consisting of copper tubing 55 having two integral lugs 60, but being otherwise of similar shape to the embodiment of Fig. 5. An insulating member 61 may surround the connector splice and be locked in place by plastic pin 62. The connector similar to that shown in Fig. 5 but without the tongue 21 may be employed for connecting the body member of an arc welding electrode holder to its welding cable (Figs. 12, 13, not shown).
