Class 97(1) An illuminating device for an optical instrument, such as a microscope, comprises a lamp, collecting lens and a diaphragm which is displaceable in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis by the instrument and is rotatable about at least two axes which intersect at or near the centre of the diaphragm. As shown, a lamp casing 1 supports a tube 3 accommodating a collecting lens and a diaphragm, this tube being rotatable about the axes 6, 7 of a carden joint which it itself displaceable longitudinally or vertically. Alternatively the tube may be connected to a ball and socket joint.
