Abstract

827,058. Photo-electric devices. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 27, 1956 [Feb. 15, 1955], No. 4406/55. Class 37. A photo-sensitive device comprises a layer of solid photoconductive material on a layer of porous photoconductive material. Fig. 1 shows a television pickup tube comprising a transparent electrode 14 on a glass base 3 with a first porous or spongy layer 21 of photoconductive material and a second solid layer 22. The electron gun assembly includes a tubular anode 16 which is provided with a metal mesh 15. In construction a tantalum boat 19 containing photoconductive material 20 is heated in an atmosphere of Xenon to evaporate the material through mesh 15 to form porous layer 21; the material is also deposited on mesh 15 and the inner surface of anode 16. The boat is then removed, the tube evacuated and mesh 15 and anode 16 inductively heated to re-evaporate the material to form solid layer 22, the glass base 3 being water cooled during this operation. To reduce the amount of material deposited, anode 16 may be provided with apertures, which may be covered by meshes or by spring urged flaps which can be placed in position by tapping the tube after completion of the evaporating processes. The semi-conductor material may consist of antimony trisulphide, zinc selenide, cadmium sulphide, cadmium selenide or germanium sulphide. To prevent reaction between the photo-conductive material and the anode 16, this may be coated with rhodium, platinum, palladium or iridium as described in Specification 827,059 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 705,533.
