A method of covering a surface of a building element 1 with sheet metal 3 including the steps of providing a plurality of undercut dovetailshaped grooves 2 in the surface to be covered, forming corresponding channel-shaped ridges 4 with parallel side portions in said sheet, placing said ridges in the grooves 2 and deforming the ridges within the grooves to anchor the sheetmetal cover to the surface of the element is characterized in that the channel-shaped ridges of the sheet-metal cover are originally formed with concave bottom portions and with a maximum depth exceeding the maximum depth of the dovetail-shaped grooves in the building element and that the sheet-metal cover, when being attached to the element, is subjected to a pressure directed towards the surface of the element and acting at least on the said side portions of the channel-shaped ridges to deform them into the dovetail-shaped groove. The jointing pressure is exerted by a press-head or roller 6 which preferably extends across the whole width of the metal sheet and the joint may be additionally bound to the underlying surface by a layer of adhesive such as asphalt or rubber cement.
