Abstract

A body having interconnected capillary pores is manufactured by bonding rice hull ash particles of irregular concavo-convex shape with a bonding agent, which may be vitreous, e.g., a mixture of powdered glass, frit, and glass fibres, or may be a material which becomes vitreous on firing, e.g., ball clay or other aluminosilicate which may be mixed with a flux, e.g., hydrated lime. The body may be moulded and fired to form a filter or humidifier plate. In an Example a humidifier plate is formed by mixing rice hull ash with 15% by weight of the ash of ball clay, 7% of hydrated lime, 5% of an agglutinant, e.g., pregelatinized starch, and up to 60% of water. The mixture is moulded under a pressure of about 400 lbs. per square inch and fired at a temperature between 1800 DEG and 2350 DEG F. Alternatively the hydrated lime may be omitted.
