Abstract

A batting of cellulose staple fibres is made by treating a batting of interlocked staple fibres of an organic acid ester of cellulose with a saponifying agent. The cellulose ester staple fibres used are preferably crimped, 1-6 inches long, and of 1-30 denier. Interlocking may be effected mechanically, by needling, or chemically, by applying either bonding agents (e.g. butadiene polymers and copolymers, melamine- and urea-formaldehyde resins, or styrene copolymers) or cellulose ester solvents or plasticizers (e.g. acetone or methylene chloride), so as to cause the fibres to coalesce at their points of contact. Application of heat and/or pressure to the batting may be used additionally to chemical interlocking methods, or as an alternative thereto. Saponification may be carried out by batch or continuous methods, and specified saponifying agents include aqueous or alcoholic sodium or potassium hydroxide. The batting is finally washed and dried, yielding a cellulose batting of enhanced density and tensile strength. Cellulose esters which may be used in the process include the acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate and acetate-butyrate. The ester batting may also contain a proportion of other fibres, e.g. cotton, rayon or glass.
