825,955. Electric tests. SCHAFER, G., and SCHAFER, O., [trading as KUGELFISCHER, G. SCHAFER, & CO.]. Aug. 30, 1956 [Sept. 1, 1955], No. 26490/56. Class 37. To determine the hardness of a steel both its remanence and saturation are compared with a sample. The Specification explains that the remanence of a sample indicates the quantity of martensite present and thus the hardness but that the presence of residual austenite reduces the saturation and thus the remanence and falsifies the hardness value obtained. As shown, a U - shaped soft iron core 1 having a central limb 7 is provided with windings 5, 6 on its outer limbs which are energized with a pulsating direct voltage, for example a half-wave rectified A.C. One of air gaps 3, 4 contains the sample under test and the other the reference. The flux on the central limb is an indication of the difference of the remanence of reference and sample when the magnetizing field is a minimum and the difference of the saturation when the field is a maximum.
