Abstract
466,925. Magnetic tests. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 17, 1936, No. 16875. Convention date, June 20, 1935. [Class 37] Tests for flaws in magnetic material are effected by two saturated magnetic cores 14, 15 in proximity to the material, the outer legs of each core being energized in opposite directions by windings 22 ... 25 fed from an A.C. source 26, the response to a flaw being obtained by an unsymmetric joint action of a magnetic field around the material and the field of the cores. Continuous-current is passed through a rail under test by source 12 through brushes 13. Normally the fluxes due to the main current in the centre legs 16, 17 of cores 14, 15, at fundamental frequency and odd harmonics are opposed, but the components due to even harmonics at saturation are additive and induce voltages in the secondary windings 27, 28. These, voltages are opposed and cancel in the absence of a flaw and are applied to an amplifier 29 which may be tuned to the second harmonic frequency. The output of the amplifier may be connected to a faulty recorder 30 or point gun marker 31.
