Abstract
825,920. Gyroscopic apparatus. ABBEY, A. (American Bosch Arma Corporation). April 19, 1956, No. 40064/57. Divided out of 825,917. Class 97(3) In gyroscopic apparatus including a pair of relatively movable members, one of the members is supported in the other by shafts, and a reservoir partially filled with liquid in one of the members has concentric rings constituting outwardly-sloping projections separated by depressions in its surface about the shaft, means on the end of the shaft to prevent escape of liquid, and a disc on the shaft extending into the liquid. As shown in Fig. 3, a gyro-compass of the kind described in Specification 825,917 has a tank 10, in which the gyroscope is floated, suspended in a gimbal ring 86 by shafts 87, fixed to the gimbal ring and turning in bearings 88 in covers 84 attached to the outside of the tank 10. A viscous damping liquid is contained in the space between each cover and the tank, and the edge of a disc 89, mounted on shaft 87, dips into the liquid. The inner face of cover 84 has outwardly-sloping ridges 94, and shaft 87 is terminated by a conical bulb 95, to prevent the liquid from finding a way out through the bearing.
