Abstract
825,861. Feeding sheets. ROFFEY, W. A., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956], No. 27306/56. Class 100(1) [Also in Group XXIX] In an air pressure regulating device arranged between a source of suction and a suction nozzle or head there is a main chamber 1, an air inlet 4 from the suction nozzle, an air outlet 5 to the suction pump &c., a pressure gauge 25, and a flexible rubber diaphragm 15 covering an opening 14 in the chamber. A piston 6, for controlling the air flow through the outlet 5, is provided with air passage grooves 7, and has a top flange provided with a rubber ring which can engage a seating to cut off the air flow when the piston moves downwardly. The stem 11 of the piston 6 is pivoted to a lever 12 rockable about a pivot 13 and a rod 18 pivoted to the other end of the lever 12 passes through the rubber diaphragm 15 and is screw-threaded to receive a nut 19 which clamps the diaphragm against a shoulder 20 on the rod 18. The diaphragm is clamped to the chamber 1 by a ring 16 and screws 17. An adjusting nut 21 on the rod 18 presses a compression spring 22 against a bridge 23 supported on posts 24 secured to the chamber 1. The spring 22 tends to urge the rod 18 downwardly and thus urges the diaphragm 15 outwardly of the chamber 1. In operation, with the suction nozzle &c. engaging a sheet &c. the air pressure in the chamber 1 is below atmospheric pressure, and the diaphragm 15 will be pulled inwardly against the action of the spring 22. The nut 21 is adjusted so that the pressure in the chamber 1 is at the desired level as shown by the gauge 25. If the internal air pressure falls below the desired level, the diaphragm 15 is pressed inwardly, the rod 18 is moved upwardly, and the piston 6 is lowered to close the outlet 5 until the desired level of internal pressure is again established by air entering through the inlet 4. The inlet 4 can be connected to a sheet-feeding nozzle, and means can be provided for cutting off the air supply after each sheet has been fed. If the nozzle fails to grasp a sheet, there is a sudden substantial increase in the air pressure in the chamber 1, and a temporary sudden and appreciable outward movement of the diaphragm 15 and rod 18; this sudden movement of the rod 18 can be utilized to operate a signal, or actuate mechanism which modifies subsequent operations.
