Abstract

A device for producing pressure impulses in a liquid comprises a diaphragm 5 separating the liquid from a cylinder 2 in which slides a piston 11 arranged to hammer a stop 6, carried by the diaphragm, so as to deflect the diaphragm and cause a pressure pulse to be induced in the liquid. A spring 13 normally urges the piston 11 into sealing engagement with a seat 12 against the action of compressed air supplied through an inlet 10 to the small annular face of the piston defined by the seat 12 and a reduced diameter portion 9 of a piston rod 8. When the piston rod is upwardly displaced, air acts on the complete annular face of the piston and hence moves upwardly to hammer the stop 6. Near the end of the piston stroke an air outlet 14 is uncovered by the piston 11 and air admitted thereto operates a valve 15 to shut off the air supply to the inlet 10. The spring 13 then returns the piston 11 which connects the outlet 14 to the atmosphere through a port 16 whereby the valve 15 operates to re-establish the air supply to the inlet 10 in preparation for a subsequent operation.
