Abstract

908,150. Regulating liquid levels. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Oct. 26, 1960 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 1543/60. Class 123 (1). [Also in Groups XVII and XXV] Apparatus for controlling the delivery of liquid, e.g. petroleum from a bulk source to a tanker 7, comprises a pneumatic main valve 3 located in a delivery pipe 1 which leads to a jointed delivery pipe 4, 5 carrying, adjacent its outlet end, a float 10 which, at a predetermined upper level of liquid, operates a pneumatic switch 17 which indirectly controls the main valve 3 to shut off further supply of petroleum. In operation, the arm 5 of the delivery pipe is secured by a clamp 9 to project through a manhole 8 in the tanker. A push-button 27 on a control unit 26<SP>1</SP> is then pressed which allows compressed-air to impinge upon the lower diaphragm 24 of a pilot valve unit 22 and open a valve port 26 so that compressed-air passes, through a pressure reducing unit 44, to the diaphragm 45 of the main valve 3 and causes the latter to open. The float 10, pivotally attached to a link 12, rises with the liquid until a predetermined liquid level is reached, whereupon the float mechanism opens a port 21 in the switch 17 so that compressed-air passes through a port 33 in a unit 32 to influence the upper diaphragm 23 of the pilot valve unit 22 and open the port 25, the main control valve-air from the pressure-reducing unit 44 being vented off. Simultaneously, the air from the switch 17 is directed, through a port 37 in a control unit 35, to the diaphragm 46 of a valve unit 38 to open a port 39 and release the air pressure from the diaphragm 45 so that the main valve 3 closes. For emergency shut down a stop button 41 is pushed so that compressed-air is delivered in parallel to the control units 35, 32 which actuate respectively the diaphragms 46, 23 of the control unit 38 and the pilot valve unit 22 so that the air pressure is removed from the diaphragm 45 of the main valve 3 which then closes.
