Abstract

Melamine is prepared by reacting at least one of the groups of compounds (a) urea and ammonium sulphamate, (b) urea and sulphur dioxide, (c) guanidine sulphamate, at 200-360 DEG C., under a superatmospheric pressure of ammonia, in the presence of at least 0.001%, by weight of the total reaction charge, of boron or a boron compound. Suitable catalysts include boron nitride, carbide, fluorides (including BF3 addition compounds such as the etherate), oxides, and boron acids and salts, particularly alkali metal and ammonium metaborates and tetraborates; hydroxyfluoboric and fluoboric acids and salts; and the reaction products of boric acid or a boron oxide with phosphorus pentoxide or a phosphoric acid. A preferred amount of catalyst is 0.5% by weight of the total reaction charge. Preferred pressures of ammonia are 34-68 atmospheres. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 704,593, 713,223 and 719,662.
