Abstract
1,193,258. Aluminium compounds. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 31 May, 1967 [9 June, 1966], No. 25839/66. Heading C1A. A hydrated aluminium compound containing nitrate, which can be converted to α-alumina, has a molar ratio of Al: NO 3 of about 1: 0À6. Ammonium ions, in the form of ammonium nitrate, the molar ratio of Al: NH 4 being about 1: 0À15, may also be present. The compound may be prepared by reacting an excess of aluminium amalgam with dilute nitric acid to produce a sol which may be dried to produce a gel. The sol may alternatively be de-watered by contacting it with an immiscible liquid such as 2-ethylhexanol which will extract water. The gel may be de-nitrated by heating at about 500‹ C. Alternatively, the sol may be denitrated directly without the drying stage, by contact with strong ammonia or an amine. The de-nitrated product may be calcined in air at 800‹ to 1400‹ C. to obtain α-alumina. Additives e.g. stabilizers for alumina may be added as nitrates to the sol.
