Abstract
825,392. Moulding corrugated sheets of thermoplastic synthetic resin. S. A. S. LAVORAZIONE MATERIE PLASTICHE (L.M.P.) DI M. I. COLOMBO & CO. March 28, 1958 [April 5, 1957 ; Feb. 1, 1958 ; March 4, 1958], No. 10051/58. Class 87(2). In a method of longitudinally corrugating a web of thermoplastic synthetic resin material the web is heated to its softening temperature, and is then drawn along and forced into the corrugations of a cooled mould whilst maintaining its original width. A web 14, Fig. 1, of a polyvinyl, methacrylic, polyethylene or other thermoplastic resin obtained by cutting a tube 12 extruded from a nozzle 11 is flattened between cooled moulds 40, 41 and drawn by rollers 15, 16 and 19, 20 along a path between infra red radiators 25, 26 and between corrugated moulds 27, 28 and 27<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>1</SP>. The latter consist of metal casings filled with. cooling water and having complementary corrugated moulding surfaces, the web being pressed into the corrugations by the weight of the upper mould assisted if desired by a spring 42. The moulds 27, 28 and 27<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>1</SP> may be replaced by moulds 127, 128, Figs. 4 and 5, comprising hollow metal cylinders 50 ... 50n and 50<SP>1</SP> to 50<SP>1</SP>m interconnected by tubes 53, 54 and 53<SP>1</SP>, 54<SP>1</SP> through which cooling water is supplied to the cylinders. In an alternative apparatus, Fig. 11 (not shown), the rollers 19, 20 are replaced by a pair of endless belts and the moulds 100, 107, Fig. 12, form corrugations of dove-tail cross-section. The mould 107 is suspended from rails (not shown) so that it may be moved horizontally into interlocking engagement with the mould 100 after the web has been passed over the corrugated surface of the latter. In a further construction a single corrugated mould only is used into the corrugations of which the web is first pressed by U-shaped tubular members and then maintained in contact with the corrugated surface by suction.
