Abstract

1,183,313. Seaming. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 April, 1967 [13 May, 1966], No. 21416/66. Heading B5K. [Also in Division F2] A method of making a laminated tubing comprises taking a strip 6 formed of sheet material, e.g. metal foil, paper or cardboard, cloth of plastics films and having a heat seal coating, e.g. polythene, on at least one of its surfaces, curving the strip into elongate tubular form with the edges of opposite surfaces of the strip either adjacent or overlapping one another, and extruding upon the outer surface of the tubing so formed a coating 10 of molten plastics material, the molten plastics being applied at a temperature sufficiently high to cause melting of said heat seal coating but not sufficiently high to cause the melting of the sheet material, and cooling the tubing at least in the position of the joint to cause the adjacent or overlapping edges to become adhered together by the heat seal coating. If a plastics strip is used, the heat sealable coating and the molten plastics should both have a melting point lower than that of the strip. As shown, a strip 6 of metal foil is drawn, by haul-off rolls 8, through a forming shoe 7 around a mandrel 1, which has water circulating inlets and outlets 2, 3 and a central air tube 4, to form a tube with its opposite edges overlapping one another axially of the mandrel. Molten plastics material, e.g. polythene, is extruded by an extruder 9 to form a coating 10 on the outer surface of the formed strip which has been treated, on both sides, with a heat seal coating. The longitudinal joint along the formed tube is pressed against the mandrel 1 by a wheel 12 provided with a non-stick coating to ensure that the edges of the strip are stuck together as the heat seal coating cools to the solid state. Cooling air from the pipe 4 may be arranged to impinge on the tubing beyond the wheel 12. The tube is collapsed by the rolls 8 which only contact the central part of the tubing which can be cut into suitable lengths to provide, e.g. tooth paste tubes. The tube may be formed by winding the strip spirally on the mandrel, and, if it is not desired to collapse the tube, the rolls 8 may be replaced by an endless belt haul off.
