Abstract

825,282. Torque - indicating wrenches. HEADLAND Ltd., T. P. Feb. 17, 1956 [Jan. 20, 1955], No. 1754/55. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A torque-indicating wrench comprises a casing 1 provided with a portion adapted for engagement with a workpiece comprising a peg 4 carried by a member 3 associated with a ratchet device, the member 3 being rotatably mounted in a chamber 2 in the casing 1 and connected interiorly of the casing to a torque transmitting lever 18 the other end of which bears against one or other of two torque reaction coil springs 19 located at either side of the lever and is also connected to a member adapted to operate an indicating instrument having a dial adapted for both left and right-hand reading. The springs are each adjustable by a screw plug which screws into a housing. The applied torque is indicated by a dial 24 rotated by a peg having a pinion at its free end, the pinion being arranged to be rotated by a rack contacted by a peg 28 mounted on the lever 18. At maximum movement of the dial the diametrically opposite portion moves round and becomes visible through the window 31 in the cover-plate and may be read against an index mark. On removal of the tool from the work, the dial remains stationary and may be reset by a knob 33. A ratchet wheel 5 is connected to the member 3 and a pawl 7 to the housing, the pawl having two operating faces for left-hand and right-hand operation of the wrench respectively and being rotatable by a turnbuckle 8.
