Abstract
824,221. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 7, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 17802/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] The requirements for minimum transmission loss in the low-pass filter section of the reactance-store " modems " disclosed in Specification 753,645, [Group XL (c)], are analysed and ideal formulae given. It is shown that the filter should have a response to a current impulse consisting of an oscillating voltage having a value of substantially zero at time intervals equal to integral multiples of the switching time period, assuming that the signal wave has a frequency between zero and half the switch operation frequency. The application of the formulae to two-way and to one-way systems, with or without repeaters, and to the system disclosed in Specification 822,297 is analysed and shown to be satisfactory. It is suggested that a sufficiently close approximation to the ideal may be achieved by a 3 or more element maximally flat filter, though a filter of the equal ripple could be used. Practical values for a 4- element maximally flat filter are given. Specification 824,222 also is referred to.
