Abstract

824,029. Supplying liquid fuel to burners. YARROW & CO. Ltd. April 8, 1957, No. 11424/57. Class 75(1) A fuel oil supply system to non-spill type pressure atomizing burners 15 comprises a low pressure pump 1 delivering oil to heaters 6, a high pressure pump 13 delivering oil from the heaters to a fuel line 14 having burner feed conduits 16 connected thereto, and a valve-controlled by-pass 17 connected in series with the fuel line 14 downstream of the burner feed conduits 16 and arranged to return oil to a point between the heaters 6 and the low pressure pump 1. The oil in the by-pass 17 is fed to nozzles 19 in a mixing chamber 5 connected into the fuel line 4 between the low pressure pump 1 and the heaters and the nozzles 19 direct the returned oil tangentially to the oil flow from the low pressure pump 1. The pressure at the inlet side of the high pressure pump 13 is maintained constant by a bypass 20 connected between the discharge and inlet sides of the low pressure pump 1 and controlled by a valve 21 operated by a diaphragm 22 one side of which is connected by a pipe 23 to the inlet side of the high pressure pump 13. The heaters have steam passages and the supply of steam thereto is controlled by a valve operated by a heat responsive element located in the fuel line leading from the heaters or in the fuel line 14 adjacent to the burners. Valves 6a, 6b permit operation of one or both heaters. The valve 18 in the by-pass 17 may be operated by remote control.
