In a machine for sealing already glued upper surfaces of a succession of cartons 12, 13 of varying heights, a slack upper belt 28, carrying rollers 31 lies on each carton and moves with it to provide the necessary pressure. A lower endless belt 10 forms a horizontal conveyer to carry the cartons 12, 13 from right to left in Fig. 1. The cartons may vary in height to a greater extent than illustrated and be in any order, The upper pressure belt 28 comprises a pair of laterally spaced endless chains 29 running on rails 37 in grooves formed by flanges 37a, 38, on side members 36 of an upper support 32. They are connected by closely spaced transverse shafts 30, carrying the freely rotatable rollers 31, which are preferably covered by an endless band 33 of cotton or other suitable material for direct contact with the upper ends of the cartons 12, 13. The belt 28 can be adjusted vertically by raising or lowering the support 32 by means of the screw devices 41 illustrated more fully in Fig. 2 (not shown), which are linked together to retain the support 32 in a horizontal position. The belt 28 is driven by a reverse gearing 55, 56, through a drive 58, known per se, which connect the sections 58a, 58b so as to maintain the speed of the upper belt about 50% greater than that of the lower belt 10. Forwardly inclined arms 53c support the belt to a level below the level of the top of the shortest carton to be passed through the machine. In this way each carton contacts a downwardly and forwardly inclined portion of the loosely hanging lower stretch of belt 28, which then lies on it as illustrated in Fig. 1, and moves with the carton because of the 50% increase in speed of the upper belt. Guides 60 may be used to prevent the band 33 from slipping sideways. The weight of the rollers may be increased if desired by inserting metal shot in them or by any other suitable means. The bottom flaps of the cartons if not already sealed, can also be sealed during progress between the belts 10, 28.
