Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials are dyed or printed by applying a dyestuff, e.g. an azo, nitro, anthraquinone or phthalocyanine dyestuff, which contains at least one solubilizing group, such as a sulphonic acid group, and at least one -SO2R group, in which R represents a beta-chloroethylamino or a beta-bromoethylamino radical, and also applying before, together with or after the dyestuff, an acidbinding agent such as a caustic alkali, sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium metasilicate or hydrated magnesium oxide. The dyestuff solutions or pastes may contain the usual adjuvants such as sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, urea, sodium alginate, cellulose ethers, starch, locust bean gum or a water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsion. The dyestuff and/or acid-binding agent solutions may be applied at temperatup to the bolres in. When the dyestuff and the acid-binding agent are applied in succession a drying operation may be applied between the two treatments. Fixation of the dyestuff may be effected by drying alone, or by heating or, in the case of printing, by steaming. In the case of printing, other dyestuffs such as leuco esters of vat dyestuffs and dyestuffs obtained by reacting colouring matters containing halogenomethyl groups with tertiary amines or thioureas may be printed alongside. Numerous examples of dyeing and printing (including one of discharge printing with a reducing discharge) are given. The dyestuffs may be obtained by treating an azo, nitro, anthraquinone or phthalocyanine dye containing a plurality of sulphonchloride groups with b -chloro-(or bromo-) ethylamine. Nitro dyestuffs may also be obtained by reacting an o-chlornitrobenzene carrying a b -chlorethylsulphonamide group with a primary aromatic amine carrying a solubilizing group, such as 4-aminoanisole-3-sulphonic acid. Azo dyestuffs may also be made by diazotizing primary amines containing -SO2R groups, such as m-aminobenzenesulphon-b -chloro-(or bromo-) ethylamide or aniline 3 : 5-di-(sulphon-b -chlorethylamide), with various coupling components, many of which are specified.
