Abstract

823,060. Making bellows; soldering. WEATHERHEAD CO. Feb. 17, 1956 [March 7, 1955], No. 4990/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups XIII and XXIX] A temperature-responsive bellows, for a valve (see Group XXIX) for use in a car cooling system, is made up of a number of discs blanked from brass strip electroplated with tinlead solder. Each disc has an inner flange 28 about a central aperture 27 and an outer flange 29 and when an assembly of discs is compressed the flanges flatten as in Fig. 4 to provide flat-mating surfaces which are secured together when the assembly is fluxed and heated. Modified discs are described, Figs. 2, 3a (not shown), one having the extreme edge of the outer flange bent back so that the disc can be formed in a single operation, since the burr formed at the edge can extend in the same direction parallel to the disc axis as the burr 32 at the inner flange, without causing interference with the adjacent disc on assembly. A hollow stem, Fig. 1 (not shown), is secured to a disc at one end of the bellows, for bearing the valve member on a screw-thread and providing access to the bellows for filling. The bellows is calibrated after filling by first sealing temporarily the passage through the stem with a ball, then immersing the bellows in liquid at the desired temperature of operation and threading the valve member on the stem until it contacts its seat on the body of the valve (to which the bellows is secured by a saddlemember). The ball is then sealed, and the valve member is fixed, with solder. The discs are compressed before soldering by the securement of the saddle member to the valve body. The entire assembly is fluxed and heated to 625‹ F. for twenty minutes and is then cooled in a flux-removing solution and bright-dipped.
