Abstract
A blowing agent for natural rubber and synthetic polymers which starts to decompose at 60 DEG C. and can be used with plastics containing small amounts of mineral acid is N:N1-dinitroso - N:N1 - dimethylglutaramide. Synthetic polymers referred to are those from butadiene, styrene, acrylamide, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and acrylic and methacrylic acid esters. Several examples of blown natural rubber are given ranging from a microcellular rubber of 150% expansion to a cellular rubber of 480% expansion. Specification 587,023, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises N,N1-dinitroso-N,N1-dimethyl glutaramide which may be prepared by treating N,N1-dimethyl glutaramide with nitrous acid or nitrosyl chloride, preferably at between - 10 DEG and 25 DEG C. The nitrosation may also be carried out by adding sodium nitrite to a mixture of the glutaramide and hydrochloric acid. In the examples: (1) HCl is added to a mixture of N,N1-dimethyl glutaramide, sodium nitrite and water at - 5 DEG C. over 2 hours, further nitrite is added followed by further HCl, keeping the temperature below 3 DEG C., 79% of a yellow solid decomposing at 80 DEG C. is obtained; (2) a similar preparation is carried out below 15 DEG C.; (2) a mixture of the N,N1-dimethyl amides of glutaric, succinic and adipic acids, obtained by treating a mixture of the esters with methylamine, is nitrosated by a similar method. N,N1-dimethyl-N,N1-dinitroso glutaramide may be used as a blowing agent for preparing rubber and plastics in a cellular form. Specification 587,023, [Group IV], is referred to.ALSO:A blowing agent for natural rubber and synthetic polymers which starts to decompose at 60 DEG C. and can be used with plastics containing small amounts of invinyl acid is N : N1-dinitroso-N : N1-dimethylgluteramide. Specification 587,023 is referred to.
