Abstract

822,528. Treating fibres. ROCKWOOL, A. B. May 16, 1957 [May 23, 1956], No. 15575/57. Class 120(3) [Also in Groups VIII, XXXVIII and XL(b)] In apparatus for producing flat formations of mineral fibres by feeding the molten mineral to a spinning machine and thence to a movable conveyer where the fibres are compressed to a mat, the speed of the conveyer is controlled in accordance with the power consumed by the spinning machine so that variations in the density of the mat are reduced. In Fig. 1 molten material from the furnace 18 falls on to the spinner 22 where it is broken up into fine drops by wheels driven by motors 24, 25. The drops solidify into fibres during passage through the air and fall on a moving conveyer 38 where they are compressed by the roller 39. Binder for the fibres is supplied by the pipes 43, 44 from a pump 45, and both the driving motors 33, 46 are controlled by the unit 31 in accordance with the power consumed by the motors 24, 25, i.e. in accordance with the weight of the fibres thrown off by the spinner 22. Thus the weight of fibres per unit length on the conveyer is kept constant. In the control unit (Fig. 2) a transformer 49 in the input lead to the spinner motors gives an output dependent on the power taken by the motors and positions a vane 53 accordingly; light from the source 60, 61 is thereby prevented from reaching the photo-cells 58, 59. When the power taken by the spinner motors increases or decreases one or other of the photo-cells develops a voltage which overcomes the bias 64 and allows one or other of the valves 62, 63 to conduct. The appropriate relay 65 or 66 is then energized and supplies current to the field winding 69 of the motor 67 to rotate it in one direction or the other. The motion is communicated to the selsyn transmitter 71" and reproduced at the receivers 73, 75. The first of these moves the photo-cells and light sources so that the screen 53 again obscures both beams, and the other drives a variable resistor 78 to regulate the speed of the conveyer motor 33. The invention may also be applied to other types of spinning machine.
