Abstract

822,456. Bolsters for railway car trucks. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES. March 17, 1958, No. 8467/58. Class 103(6) The oscillations of a railway truck bolster 2, Fig. 2, on its supporting springs 16 are dampened by wear plates 32, 39 attached to columns 10 of a side frame member 4. The bolster is received between the columns 10 and each side has guide lugs 18, 20, Fig. 1, for sliding engagement therewith. One side wall of the bolster acts as a friction face 30 to engage wear plate 32 and the other has formed therein a pocket 41 for shoes 40 placed one above the other which have pockets 52 to receive the ends of a spring 51 which urges the shoes away from each other and against the wear plate 39 to cause the bolster to move laterally and engage the face 30 with the plate 32. Diagonal guide surfaces 49, 50 formed in spaced guide webs 44, 45 of the bolster diverge towards the side wall of the bolster and engage complementary surfaces in the shoes to direct the shoes into engagement with wear plate 39 in response to expansion of spring 51. In a modification, a friction shoe 56, Fig. 3, is shaped to enter a V-shaped pocket 53 formed in the left side wall of the bolster 2.
