Abstract

822,291. Combing machines. MORTON, W. E., and T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. April 5, 1957 [Feb. 4, 1956; March 22, 1956], Nos. 3560/56 and 8931/56. Class 120(1) In a rectilinear textile combing machine, means are provided whereby the draft imposed by the detaching rollers on the combed fibre fringe is substantially constant during substantially the whole of the period between engagement of the foremost fringe fibres by the detaching rollers and the moment when the distance between the detaching rollers and the nippers has decreased to within a predetermined angle of the cylinder shaft revolution of its minimum value. In Fig. 3, the displacement of the top comb of a rectilinear cotton comb during the drafting period from time t<SP>2</SP> to time t<SP>3</SP> is shown by the curve f, b; during this period the detaching roller is under the control of a cam so shaped that the slope at any point of the roller displacement curve h, d bears a constant ratio to that at the corresponding time point of curve f, b so that a constant draft is maintained during the drafting period. The detaching roller comes to rest at time t<SP>3</SP> and then moves forwardly again, still under cam control, until time t<SP>4</SP> to effect detaching of the drafted web. From t<SP>5</SP> to t<SP>6</SP> the roller is reversed for piecing under the control of an eccentric which is adjustable to vary the net advance of the roller during each cycle; desirably this net advance should equal the displacement h, j of the roller during drafting. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the detaching roller shaft 14 is driven from a shaft 2 (an-extension of or geared to the combing cylinder shaft) through epicyclic gearing the sun wheel 8 of which is given an oscillatory motion through a gear 6 engaging a toothed sector 3 pivoted at 4 and carrying a cam follower 5 engaging a groove in a cam 1; the planet carrier 9 is driven at a constant forward speed via gears 10, 17 (not shown), 16 and 15, 17 being a change gear which can be altered to vary the constant drive component. Fig. 1 shows the displacement curve A one to the cam drive, and the curve B1 one to the constant drive; together these give the desired net displacement curve C1 for constant drafting. By altering the constant component from B1 to B2, the displacement curve is altered to C2 with a resultant change in the net advance. Constant draft may alternatively be obtained by rotating the detaching rollers at a constant speed, and providing a cam control for the motion of the top comb so that the distance between the rollers and the top comb diminshes at a constant rate. In a rectilinear worsted comb, the surface speed of the detaching rollers is similarly arranged to bear a fixed relation to the rate of approach of the rollers to the nippers; this may be effected by driving the rollers through a suitably shaped cam which controls the motion of a toothed quadrant engaging with a pinion on the end of the bottom detaching roller shaft.
