Abstract

A sliver is opened and drafted by a pair of intermeshing rollers which are covered by spaced rings of teeth arranged so that each ring on one roller extends between adjacent rings on the other roller, with one roller being rotated at a surface speed substantially greater than the other. As described a pair of feed rollers feed the sliver onto the surface of the slower roller whose teeth are inclined outwardly in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation so that the faster roller whose teeth are inclined outwardly in the direction of rotation causes the sliver at the start of the zone of co-operation between the rollers to be pressed into the teeth of the slower roller and at the end of the zone of co-operation to be combed out of that roller - the sliver being drafted by the rollers in the zone. The sliver may be removed from the faster roll by a further roller similar to the slower roll and rotating faster than the faster roller and may be subjected to one or more further drafting and opening steps. At the output end of the machine there is a pair of plain-surfaced draw-off rollers which may be the intake rollers of a spinning frame or may deliver the sliver to a bobbin winding arrangement.
