Abstract

822,216. Tool-holders; milling-cutters. O.K. TOOL CO. Inc. Oct. 4, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1957], No. 31169/57. Class 83 (3). A milling-cutter, lathe tool, &c. comprises a " throw-away tip 4 having a plurality of cutting-points indexable into the cutting position and an opening 6 to receive a member 7 of a cross-section such as to hold the tip against rotation, the member 7 being mounted in an opening 3 in a body or holder 1 for the tip, which is removed from its seating 2 on the holder during indexing. The tip, of polygonal section (e.g. triangular, octagonal or, as illustrated, square section), is clamped against the seating by the head 8, of similar section, of the member 7, which is drawn into the holder by a screw 9. The head 8 may be split at 10 and the clamping pressure increased by a pointed screw 5 in the head. The inner and outer peripheries of the tip are bevelled, and the inner periphery may be lined with soft metal to facilitate manufacture. In a modification, Fig. 5, the member 17 and a seating-ring 15 are permanently secured to the holder 11, as by brazing. The head 18 of member 17 is formed with slots 20, Fig. 8, and expanded by the radial ribs 23 of an expander 22 to grip the inner periphery of the tip 14. A screw 19 clamps the expander 22 and a chip breaker 21 on the head 18.
