Abstract
821,618. Laminating. ALLDAY, G. J. Dec. 5, 1956 [Dec. 13, 1955; May 14, 1956], Nos. 35803/55 and 14990/56. Class 140. [Also in Groups XV and XXXIII] A boat or other structure comprises at least one layer of glass fibre material embedded in a thermo-setting resin material and one or more wood members totally enclosed and hermetically sealed by a covering of thermo-setting resin material. A " Gell " coat of synthetic resin material is applied to a mould, after two coats of polyvinyl alcohol have thoroughly dried, and a fine surfacing mat of fibreglass pressed into the resin. The first main layer of fibreglass is laid on to a thick coating of resin lay-up mix and wooden inner floor members 11, seat pads 12, gunwales 13 and buoyancy packs 14 wrapped in fibreglass are placed into position. A second layer of fibreglass is applied and additional strips placed on the wooden members and buoyancy packs and a second thick coat of resin lay-up mix is applied. The assembly is covered with a layer of reconstituted cellulose material to prevent adhesion to a rubber bag which is sealed to the assembly by clamping. A vacuum applied between the assembly and the bag forces the resin, after heating, through the glass fibre material. After a temperature of 200 F has been retained for 30 minutes, the material becomes hard and the hull with the hermetically sealed wooden structural members is allowed to cool before being removed from the mould.
