Abstract

776,065. Moulding cricket bats &c. LEWIS, J., and RUBBER IMPROVEMENT, Ltd. April 25, 1955 [March .4, 1954], No.6366/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XV] A cricket-bat or part thereof is composed of cold- or thermo-setting resins (e.g. polyester or phenolic resins) reinforced by fibrous matererial (e.g. glass, cotton, polyamide, rayon or polyester fibre) which may be woven. The resins may be modified by admixture with other polymerizable materials such as polystyrene, methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate. As shown in Fig. 1, two half moulds 1 (made of plaster of Paris, wood or flexible material such as polyvinyl chloride) are lined with the resin into which the fibres are pressed and several layers 2 are thus built up until the desired thickness is attained. The resin is then set, the exposed edges are machined off, the two mould halves are put face to face and the two half bats are joined by application of a layer of resin which is then set. In a modified method a core of cork is covered with resin and fibre and located in a mould in which the resin is set to form the bat. In a further method, a fibrous structure is applied to a thermoplastic core which is then dipped in resin and placed in a mould. When heat is applied to set the resin, the core liquifies and pressure is applied to it to cause it to press the resin against the mould wall. In a modification of this method, the thermoplastic core is covered with the fibrous structure and placed in the mould, liquid resin then being poured between the core and mould. According to the Provisional Specification, hockey sticks or golf clubs may be made by the above methods. Specification 749,614 [Group XV] is referred to.
