Abstract

821,586. Blasting detonators and fuzes; explosive compositions. NOBEL-BOZEL. June 12, 1957 [June 16, 1956], No. 18544/57. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) An electric detonator comprises a tube 1 of conducting metal e.g. Cu, closed by an insulating plug 3 through which ex- tends a conducting rod 4 e.g. of brass, the rod and tube constituting electrodes to which leads 5, 6 are connected. The rod 4 is embedded in the explosive composition 7 filling the tube, the explosive being rendered conducting by the inclusion of lamp black, graphite, metal powders or pigments such as bronze or aluminium. To obtain the explosive a 40% aqueous solution of hydrazine hydrate may be mixed with a 30% equeous solution of nickel nitrate. The resultant precipitate is then dehydrated and washed with methanol or ethanol and after drying is powdered before mixing with the conducting material. In an example 70 parts by weight of the composition are mixed with 30 parts of Al flake. In a modification, a cylindrical cavity is formed in a plastic dynamite and filled with the pulverulent electrically conducting explosive. Two brass blades separated by a distance piece of insulating material and welded to electric leads are then embedded in the explosive filling. The hydrazine hydrate may be replaced by semi-carhazide or oxyamines.
